Picture this, you are in your 30s, enjoying your busy working life, when your 10 year-old son got bullied by his friends, AGAIN, for the 5th time this week now just because he isn’t strong enough to defend himself. You are faced with several rational choices, console him, AGAIN, or, you could force him to face his fears by confronting his bullies and if not, punish him.

Sounds tough for a 10 year old, I know. But think about it, if consoling or counselling him is not going to work anymore. So, why not push him to defend himself?

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this is my issue, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. You see, Cinderella probably got tired being pushed around by her evil stepmother and sisters and so she disobeyed their orders and went to the ball anyways. Huuh, she finally became woman enough to fight for what she deserves. Rapunzel definitely got tired being pushed around that she fled her tower to find true love. Fa Mulan took her father’s place in the army when the situation got tough and became China’s hero.

The point is, we know for a fact that people, respectable ones of course, toughen up themselves when the situation gets ugly. So, what am I asking today is can we create tough lessons, tough situations for tomorrow’s leaders so that the world becomes a better and tougher place? Are we supposed to?

You see, Amy Chua, Law Professor at Yale Law School a.k.a Tiger Mom argues that Western parenting tries to respect and nurture children’s individuality, while Chinese parents typically believe that arming children with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence prepares them best for the future. Her children are never allowed to watch TV, play computer games or go to sleepovers. While Sophia, Amy’s first-born practises, she looms over the piano saying encouraging things like: “If the next time’s not perfect, I’m going to take all your stuffed animals and burn them.”

In her book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”, she wrote and I quote, “Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, "Hey fatty-lose some weight." By contrast, Western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking in terms of "health" and never ever mentioning the f-word, and their kids still end up in therapy for eating disorders and negative self-image." End of quote. To prove her point, Amy Chua’s daughter, Sophia has been accepted by both Harvard and Yale.

People, sooner or later, it will be our turn to raise leaders of the future. So it seems right to question, are we strong enough to build tough children so that they get going? I suggest that we never let our guards down, not only for a better today, not only for a better tomorrow, but for a better society, as a whole!!! THANK YOU~

There are moments where I wonder whether or not I would have done things differently, if I ever had the chance to go through them again; I do not mean life-changing choices or paths, but things regarding my integrity, that is, if I even have it. Casing point, a much younger girl in high school, stranger, sobbing quietly by the balcony, would I have gone to her and asked her what is wrong? Somehow, I always managed to come around myself and convince my conscience that she might not even be crying at all!

When I decided to care about the incident, I wonder what happened to me so much that I so diligently equipped myself with such vast cowardice. The results are almost genius! Then there are times I wonder why it even bothered me in the first place at all. The former thought is what occupies my mind, but the fact that I chose to do nothing about it make no difference in either thoughts. At the end of the day, I am still a worthless, if not heartless bitch.

But have no fear, for heroines and female fictional characters shall be with me, reminding me to be the hawt leading lady of my currently sad life.

I am sometimes amazed by how little and insignificant a whole life can possibly be when you do not end up on the right path you set out to walk on. I pray that I am just saying. Maybe it is just that we try so damn hard to be different from others, oh wait, there is nothing wrong with that. It is just hard to meddle with its success rate, for me, anyways.

Fuck, I am talking about life-changing choices.

Do I matter?

I guess I that I depend on the people who think that I matter.

There are times, so many, I feel so low, so embarrassed, so insecure that I have to shift my thoughts so that I do not hear my heart sink into the deepest of made-up despair. The faked cheerful behaviour of mine, as if being alone does not matter; as if it never did. And then there is this proud, arrogant front that the haters only see; since the rest of the population does not even give a fuck.

So that is why love is important, I believe. Now I might have to have my theory revised, lust; lust is important. Can you lust for a person so much that you want them loved as well? What if you give a person so much because you love her, but what she wanted is actually to be wanted, to be lusted after? Be that entirely different situation? You can't force yourself to want, or can you?

Where is my pride? Where did my nonchalant behaviour go? Why am I afraid all the time? Why is it so damn important for me to want to be assured again, and again, and again? It is too much to believe that I do not have to ask for what I think I deserve? Is it too much for people, people to just, know?

And then I ask whether or not I brought this all upon myself. Maybe I chose to not love myself more, in a sense that I am not the better version of what I could be; my grades, my looks, my every other detail. After all, the same colours can paint an entirely different picture.

IPG Life, Day 135: I made this choice

It is already not the question of whether or not the choice I made coming here, taking up the teaching course is the right one; hell, it is not like I have got other options, besides, I will never know until I live the happy successful moment of my life, or perhaps, my last few years of life. And then there is the saying,

"Those who can, do; those who can't, teach."

Anyways, there are times. Sometime I wallow in self-pity, wondering how and why I got here. Why, oh why? I have been doing that for as long as I can remember. About Form 3, I think, when I failed to get straight As for PMR, that was when I crush myself, bit by bit. I am not saying that there are not happy and glorious times; debate competitions, public speaking, concerts, president, those events made me laugh. Yet, I have not been truly, utterly contentedly joyous, have I? Maybe I just do not know how to appreciate.

Why can I not just be thankful for a minute? In GLEE, Emma said,

"At what age are you allowed to look back on your life with nothing but regret? Is 32 too young?"

I was not suppose to be able to relate to that. None of them my age were able to relate to that. But it is not just about this path I chose. It is so much more. I used to believe that I would drift through high school, get at least an above average result, enough for my to get a scholarship, go to college, meet a guy and date, then marry and have kids.

Now all that seemed like, well, I dunno. I did do a pretty good job of convincing myself that I never want to or have to worry about boys, men, boyfriends, husbands and all that shit. Yet, I think I am falling apart, in a middle-age crisis way. It was not suppose to matter; it was suppose to be Queen Elizabeth 1 and Jane Austen for me, single but legendary. These days, looking at old single lecturers and teachers freaks me out. If I were ever to be single, I do not want to look sad. Old, alone, done for. And I am just eighteen, for the love of God.

Somehow, somehow... I need to revise my theory on so many things, success, happiness, life, relationships and what they actually mean. I do not want to be a wasted one in this life. I always knew I could be or so better. But where is my courage? It does not even matter when I start to not love myself anymore. It is sad. Purely and genuinely sad.

I need to fucking chill and acknowledge the fact that I am better than those small, insignificant wonders that I tough myself to even actually compare to them, those people. I need to hope, and at the same time, better myself.

Dear Pei Qin, when you read this, you can still route and re-route your future life; that is the luxury that I do not have. So work hard, I wish you the best and I miss you.

It was the funnest. Being the youngest in class, I was pranked. Geez poor me did not have it coming. It was 20 minutes before class ends, Miss Izzati played mad at me for not completing my task. Then the whole class, which was their idea anyways pretended to be shocked by Miss' crying in class. Out came 2 girls with a big chocolate cake cradled in their hands. Naturally, the first thought that came to me was, "Oh God, but Miss is angry at us.. why are they doing this now??" Damn I am slow. Miss came in right behind them and then I got the prank. The whole commotion was touchy and exciting with me chanting, "Oh my God... Oh my God.." Shureen and gang even recorded their phone version of "Happy Birthday" and played it through the loud speaker. Then there was cake feeding, hugging, laughing, and tearing up on my part..

My secondary-school life officially ended during the last day of SPM, Chinese subject - the toughest; that did not stop us from being overly excited. We knew that when the teacher says, “Now, put down your pen…” we would be on our way to heaven-on-earth. 15 seconds before the final bell, the whole school chanted, “15, 14, 13….” all the way to 1.

When it finally rang, we heard students shriek from inside the main hall right across the other block. It was THAT exciting. Exams were supposed to be quiet, but I guess the teachers understood us then. I do not remember being so excited. Perhaps I knew that I did not put in my all for the exam.

People say that life-after-SPM is the most enjoyable, until college starts. I had a whole list of things-to-do; not that particular day, though. My bestie, Yi Ling and I went to Aeon Jusco and watched “Resident Evil” which was not as good as I would like (although I love Milla Jovovich). We spent the rest of the day talking about guys, eating and talking about guys. That was about it.

It was pretty scary, not knowing what the future holds to, then.
